Bent not broken
"Everyone has their own complications throughout life, big or small they happen, For me it's my scoliosis . Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine; I was diagnosed with scoliosis in September of this school year. The doctors had told me that I had stopped growing so a brace wouldn't do anything, and since I was already at a 50 degree angle, surgery was one of my options. This was definitely a complication for me, I was going into my final year of high-school and now I had something else to worry about. But life goes on, I had meetings with doctors, an MRI, two trips to see a specialist in Nanaimo and almost every month a chiropractic session. I really didn't like talking about my back, it just made me feel uncomfortable.
I decided to express my feelings of scoliosis through art by creating a painting. To start my painting, I took a photo of my back, so I could have a true reflection of myself. The thorns in my painting represent all of the challenges I have gone through in this experience. In contrast, the flowers represent how I'm overcoming them and seeking new ways to heal. For my color choices I used hints of pinks, reds and whites, very warm colours that contrast with the flowers and a mainly black backgrounds that contrasts with the thorns, I want people to get an idea of what my spine looks like, as well as what scoliosis can feel like. I'm proud of the painting I've made, it has helped me to express my feelings about scoliosis when I couldn't express them through words."
