Meet Elizabeth Reed
Elizabeth’s scoliosis story began at her 6th grade “Scoliosis Screening” at school when she was 12 years old. The nurse was using a Scoliometer that showed a measurement of 7 degrees of rotation. This usually equates to a Cobb angle around 3 times larger…or about a 21 degree Cobb angle. The nurse informed the parents, but really didn’t make too big a deal about it, so Elizabeth and her parents decided to hold off with doing anything. After about a year carrying a heavy back pack at school, Elizabeth’s mom noticed that her posture had gotten a little worse. That’s when they decided to go see their MD.
She discovered her scoliosis: 25 degrees
The MD took an x-ray and found a 25 degree scoliosis. The MD recommended a hard brace and told them to follow up in 3-6 months. Elizabeth’s parents didn’t feel real comfortable doing just a hard brace. It didn’t make any sense to them. They had seen how it can cause weakness and rigidity in the spine and wanted to look for something with fewer side effects. That’s when her parents went online and found the SpineCor soft bracing system through Scoliosis Systems and Gary Deutchman, DC. Dr. Deutchman braces his Northern California patients out of Janzen & Janzen Health Center.
Schroth exercise program & 2 week intensive scoliosis program
After her initial exam, it was determined that she would also benefit from the Schroth-based exercise program and the more aggressive 2-Week Scoliosis Treatment Program. All the treatments seemed to make perfect sense to Elizabeth and her parents, so they started the whole program.
After Elizabeth completed her 2-Week Intensive Scoliosis Program, Janzen & Janzen gave her the Home Program to continue the treatments. Her home program consisted of wearing the SpineCor brace at night and during study times, Spinal Weighting two to three times per day, specific dural tension stretches, and the Schroth-based exercises and posture corrections. Because Elizabeth had a very flexible curve, it was determined that she would not need the Scoliosis Traction Chair.
Her scoliosis went from 25 degrees to 6 degrees
Six months after working on her Scoliosis Program at home, Elizabeth’s scoliosis reduced from 25 degrees to 12 degrees. Her program was advanced and modified at her follow-up appointments and another 3 months later, the curve had reduced to 6 degrees.
Elizabeth has since held stable and is now 16 years old.
